Launch is a first step to the future

On 15 July 2014, over 60 people from across the Australian ecosystem science and management communities gathered in Canberra to celebrate the launch of Foundations for the future: a long-term plan for Australian ecosystem science.

The launch of this long-term plan is a landmark event for the Australian ecosystem science community, as it is the first time such a strategy has been developed to establish a core vision, key directions, and priorities for Australian ecosystem science. Taking up the tough challenges we face as a nation the ecosystem science community asked: what can we do to contribute more effectively to the national wellbeing? In short, what strategy is needed to deliver excellent science for the benefit of Australia?

In response to those questions, over 600 people engaged in a nationwide consultation to identify the priorities for the future of ecosystem science. The collective voice of that community is distilled and presented in Foundations for the future.

In launching the document, the Chief Scientist of Australia Prof Ian Chubb AC spoke of the need to act in studying and managing our ecosystems before the problems become too large. He also highlighted the important role of collaboration across traditional discipline and institutional boundaries for achieving meaningful progress in Australian science. This point was echoed by Prof Chennupati Jagadish, Vice President of the Australian Academy of Science, who celebrated the collaborative process used to develop the plan saying, 'Working together is vital to ensure we're heard.'

Of course, the release of the Plan is just the first step! Over the coming years there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved in bringing the Plan and its recommendations to life. The implementation of the Plan will remain collaborative and open, inviting input and participation from across the ecosystem science community. You can read more about the next steps here.
